The Quonset hut began as a World War II innovation—an all-purpose, rapidly deployable structure that helped America build, store, and shelter across the globe.
Born of War, Built to Last
During World War II, the U.S. Navy needed a fast, durable, and easily transported structure for housing troops and equipment. The result? The Quonset Hut — a semicircular, corrugated steel building that could be shipped anywhere and assembled quickly with just a few tools.
More than 150,000 Quonset Huts were built between 1941 and 1945. After the war, they became a cornerstone of American life — transformed into homes, workshops, and warehouses.
The video below shows the humble beginnings of the Quonset hut — and how a wartime innovation became a timeless design.
At Duro Buildings, we carry on that legacy. Our modern arch-style buildings are inspired by the original Quonset design — engineered for today’s codes, built to last for generations, and made right here in the USA.
